You may have heard that intermittent fasting can help with weight management and overall health. But for athletes, there is another important question: could fasting affect your performance?

Intermittent fasting involves going without food for certain periods of time. While it has become popular among athletes, research shows that its effects on performance are not the same for everyone.

During exercise, the body mainly uses carbohydrates stored as glycogen for energy. When fasting, these stores can decrease, causing the body to rely more on fat for fuel. This does not necessarily mean better performance, though.

Some studies found that intermittent fasting had little effect on aerobic performance in runners and cyclists. Other studies reported increased fatigue or reduced power during repeated, high-intensity activities.

For athletes, one of the biggest concerns is getting enough fuel. Training requires energy, while recovery requires enough protein, carbohydrates, and other nutrients. If fasting makes it difficult to meet these needs, it could affect recovery and performance.

The timing of meals also matters. Athletes should consider whether their eating window allows them to properly fuel before training and eat enough afterward to support recovery.

The effects may also depend on the type of sport. An endurance athlete with high energy needs may have different nutritional demands than someone focused mainly on strength training.

At this point, there is no clear answer that intermittent fasting improves athletic performance. More research is needed, and athletes should consider their individual needs before making major changes to their eating habits.
